Wood is beautiful, but damp soil isn't good for it. Without proper inner protection a planter can rot in 2-3 years. Proper accessories — geotextile liner, plastic insert, good drainage — extend the planter's life to 10+ years.

Which accessory for which planter
Geotextile liner: for most outdoor planters — ideal balance between permeability and protection. Plastic insert: for indoor use or sensitive plants. Mats: for covered places (terrace, balcony) avoiding standing water. Wall mounts: for small balconies with little floor.
Eco vs. practical
For a fully eco solution, geotextile liners are compostable and let water pass naturally. Plastic inserts are more practical (complete protection, easy cleaning), but less eco. Each product states composition.
Tip: When buying a new wooden planter, don't forget the geotextile liner — a small investment that extends life from 3 to 10+ years.
