Nativity — Christmas tradition with Czech roots
A wooden nativity is the oldest Czech Christmas decoration with a firm tradition — carving work from lime wood, passed down generations. Unlike the religious variant (used in churches year-round), this category contains Christmas-specific nativities: figures in winter dress, scenes with the Star of Bethlehem, Christmas atmosphere. Set up under the tree on 24 December and pack away on 7 January for next year.
Types of nativity
- Classic figure sets — 5-7 figures (Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, donkey, ox, shepherd, angel)
- Extended sets — 12-15 figures with Three Kings, more shepherds, sheep
- Flat/standing nativities — cut from one wooden board, stands on shelf
- Stable architecture — stable, manger, Star of Bethlehem
- Mini nativities — palm-size, for desk or travel
Material and sizes
Solid lime wood (classic carving tradition — soft, holds detail when carved), beech (more durable, better for variable humidity), alder (natural look). Figure size: 5-8 cm for palm sets, 8-15 cm for tabletop nativity under tree, 15-25 cm for statement piece on its own table. Finish: hand-painted (classic Christmas variant) or natural wood colour (modern minimalist).
Tip: If starting your Christmas nativity tradition this year, get a basic set of 5-7 figures (Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, animals, angel). Each subsequent Christmas add 1-2 more figures (shepherd, another animal, Three Kings). After five years you have an extended nativity with emotional attachment to each figure.
