Jewellery is one of the most personal gifts you can give – and that is exactly why it is so easy to miss the mark. Wooden jewellery has one advantage here: it does not carry the price expectations of gold and silver, so you can give it even to someone you are not particularly close to. All that remains is to choose the right piece.
How to choose when you are not sure
Look at what she wears now. It is not detective work – just think back to the last three times you met. Does she wear small studs or long drop earrings? Does she like bold single pieces, or does she layer several small ones? This will narrow your choice more than any general advice.
A safe choice is smaller earrings or a pendant. You do not have to worry about wrist size or ring size, and they go with most outfits. A bold brooch or large geometric earrings, on the other hand, are a strong style statement – buy them only if you know what she actually wears.
Consider where the jewellery will be worn. People who work with their hands, in a laboratory or in healthcare do not wear bracelets anyway. For such jobs, earrings or a brooch for a coat are a more practical choice than anything on the wrist.
🌳 Jewellery nobody else will have. The wood grain is different on every piece – handmade from Czech woods.
Browse wooden jewelleryFive types of jewellery and who they suit
1. Earrings: the surest bet
Wooden earrings have one quality you will not find in metal ones – they are incomparably lighter. Women who complain that large earrings pull on their earlobes can wear even bold shapes in wood without discomfort.
If you are unsure, go for a medium size and a simple shape. For someone who dresses boldly, large geometric pieces that work as the single accent to a plain outfit are a rewarding choice.
2. Bracelet: mind the size
A bracelet is a lovely gift with one risk – it has to fit. For rigid pieces without a clasp, check the wrist size in advance, or it will end up in a drawer. Versions with an adjustable clasp or elastic models are safer.
A wooden bracelet works well on its own or layered with others. If the recipient wears a watch, expect the bracelet to go on the other wrist.
3. Brooch: a comeback nobody expected
For a long time, the brooch was considered jewellery for grandmothers, and over the last few years it has been making a comeback. Its advantage is practical: it is worn on a coat, jacket or jumper – over a layer of clothing where it is visible even in winter, unlike a necklace hidden under a scarf.
It is also the boldest style choice on the whole list. Buy it for someone you know enjoys playing with accessories.
4. Pendant and necklace: the most personal option
Pendants and necklaces are ideal when you want to give a gift meaning. A tree, heart or animal motif carries a message the recipient will associate with you. A longer chain looks more casual, a shorter one more formal.
A pendant is also where engraving comes into its own – a name, date or short message on the back turns an ordinary piece of jewellery into something you cannot buy in a shop.
5. Bow tie: a gift for men
A category often forgotten when it comes to jewellery. A wooden bow tie is eye-catching but not eccentric – it works at a wedding, a school-leavers' ball or a company party. For a man who does not wear jewellery, it is often the only accessory he will happily put on.
How much to spend on jewellery
Wooden jewellery sits at a different price level from precious metals, and as a gift that is more of an advantage. You can give a nice piece to a colleague, neighbour or friend without embarrassing them or creating a sense of obligation.
At the same time, price says nothing about how a gift will be received. What matters is matching the person's style – well-chosen small earrings will please more than an expensive piece the recipient never wears. If you are unsure, invest in getting the choice right rather than in size.
Making the jewellery last
Wooden jewellery copes with everyday wear without problems, but it has three enemies: prolonged soaking, chemicals and intense heat. Take it off before showering, swimming and the sauna. Apply perfume and hairspray before putting the jewellery on, not after.
Cleaning is simple – a dry soft cloth, slightly dampened if necessary. Never use alcohol, cleaning products or an ultrasonic cleaner designed for metal jewellery. From time to time you can wipe the surface with a drop of wood oil to keep its colour and stop it drying out.
Store pieces individually rather than in a heap. Wood is softer than metal and is easily scratched by clasps and chains.
Gift-giving tip: With jewellery, the packaging matters a lot. A wooden box feels different from a paper bag and also serves afterwards as a place to put the jewellery when taken off. If you are giving an engraved piece, add a short note explaining why you chose that particular motif – the recipient will remember it longer than the piece itself.
If you are buying for someone who does not wear jewellery at all, consider a small hair accessory or a keyring instead. Not every gift has to be jewellery to delight.

Frequently asked questions
Which wooden jewellery should I choose if I do not know the recipient's taste?
The safest choice is smaller earrings or a simple pendant. You do not need to worry about wrist size or finger size, and they go with most outfits. A bold brooch or large geometric earrings, by contrast, are a strong style choice.
Is wooden jewellery suitable for people with allergies?
Wood itself is usually gentler on sensitive skin than metal alloys. With earrings, however, what matters is the material of the hook or post that is in direct contact with the earlobe. If you are buying for someone with a confirmed metal allergy, check what the metal part of the specific product is made of.
Can wooden jewellery get wet?
Brief contact with water is fine, prolonged soaking is not. Take it off before showering, swimming and the sauna. After rain, just wipe the jewellery and let it dry naturally away from direct heat. Apply perfume and hairspray before putting the jewellery on.
How should I clean wooden jewellery?
Wipe it with a dry soft cloth, slightly dampened if necessary. Do not use cleaning products, alcohol or an ultrasonic cleaner for metal jewellery. From time to time you can wipe the surface with a drop of wood oil to keep its colour.
Is wooden jewellery suitable for formal occasions?
Yes, just choose simpler shapes and darker woods. For a wedding or the theatre, smaller earrings or a pendant work well, and for men a wooden bow tie. Save bold coloured pieces for everyday wear.
