There is one category of gifts where you simply can't go wrong: things people use every day that won't offend anyone. A wooden notebook belongs right here – it isn't gender-specific, it suits any profession and, unlike a pen with a logo, it won't vanish under the desk within a week.
Why a notebook works where other gifts fail
It doesn't require you to know their taste. With most gifts you have to guess – whether the person likes this colour, this style, this scent. A notebook is neutral. Either they write or they don't, and that's easy to find out.
It lasts a long time. A notebook gets filled over months, sometimes years. Every set of meeting notes, project plan or note in the margin means another moment with your gift. Few things at a similar price will remind someone of you so often.
It can be personalised without losing its purpose. An engraved name on the cover doesn't get in the way – quite the opposite, the notebook can't be mixed up in a meeting room where five of them are lying around. For corporate gifts, this is a real advantage over anonymous items.
And one more thing: handwriting is making a comeback. Many people who spent years typing everything into their phones are returning to paper – for better focus, and because a notebook doesn't pop up with notifications.

1. Colleagues and your team
The most common corporate gifting scenario: the same product for everyone, but with an individual name. Each employee gets something uniform, yet personal. We covered office gifting in more detail in our article on gifts for colleagues.
2. Clients and business partners
Here a logo on the front works well – but discreetly. People recognise a gift that is mainly an advertising carrier, and they put it aside. A smaller, elegant engraving makes a very different impression from a logo across the whole cover.
In the Czech Republic, companies that must meet a mandatory quota for employing people with disabilities can also combine the purchase with substitute fulfilment of that quota.
3. Students and school leavers
A gift for getting into university, finishing school or graduating. An engraving with their name and year turns it into a keepsake that people hold on to even after it's full. It works better than most of the things traditionally given on these occasions.
4. Teachers
Teachers write all the time – lesson plans, meeting minutes, notes about pupils. A notebook marked with the class and school year has one more quality: over the years it grows into a collection where each piece belongs to a different year group.
5. Yourself
I mention this on purpose, because a wooden notebook is surprisingly often bought as a gift to oneself. Anyone who keeps a journal, a planner or reading notes will appreciate holding something other than a laminated cover.
How to choose
Format. A5 is the most versatile – it fits in a bag but is large enough for proper notes. Smaller formats suit a pocket and quick jottings; larger ones are good for sketching, planning and meeting notes.
Wood. Light beech and maple look clean and make engraving stand out. Oak, with its more pronounced grain, has more character, but fine lettering gets lost in it. If you're planning a longer text, choose a calmer wood.
Inner pad. Check whether it can be replaced. Some designs allow it, others don't – and for someone who fills a notebook in six months, that makes a big difference. The covers last much longer than a single pad.
Engraving tip: Less text is always better. A name, or a name and a year. Long sentences don't stand out on a notebook cover and start to grate over time – especially on a gift meant to last for years. Write a personal message by hand on the first page instead. You can try out your engraving design in our online configurator, where you see straight away what the result will look like.
What to add
A notebook is a gift that pairs well with others. The most natural addition is a wooden pencil or pencil holder – together they feel like a thoughtful set, while the price rises only a little.
Another option is to add a bookmark, especially with a larger notebook where it helps to mark where you left off. For a student or teacher, a notebook plus bookmark combination works very well.
And finally, something that costs nothing: write a short handwritten dedication on the first page. The notebook will be opened a hundred times, and each time that page comes first. Many people keep their notebook precisely because of it, even once it's full.
What suits whom
| Recipient | Format | Engraving |
|---|---|---|
| Colleague, team | A5 | Name, or company logo |
| Client, partner | A5 | Discreet logo |
| Student, school leaver | A5 | Name and year |
| Teacher | A5 | Name, class, school year |
| For pocket and travel | Smaller | Initials |
A word on quantities. With bulk orders for a whole team, it pays to order a few extra pieces – there's always someone who was left off the list, or a new colleague joins. Ordering a few more engraved pieces in December is often a problem.

Why people are returning to paper
It's worth asking why the notebook hasn't gone out of fashion as a gift, even though everyone has a phone. Handwriting has a different rhythm – it's slower, which forces you to put things into words, and no notifications from five apps pop up while you do it.
That's why many people run a hybrid system: calendar and tasks in digital form, notes and thinking on paper. It's for that second part that notebooks are bought – and that's exactly why it makes a good gift for anyone who works with their head.
Frequently asked questions
Which notebook format should I choose?
A5 is the most versatile – it fits in a bag but is large enough for proper notes, which is why it's the most popular choice for both corporate and personal gifts. Smaller formats suit a pocket, larger ones sketching and meeting notes.
What should I have engraved on the cover?
For a personal gift, a name works well; for a corporate one, a logo. A combination of both also works – the logo on the front with the recipient's name in smaller lettering beneath it. Avoid long texts; a shorter inscription is more legible and looks better.
Can a new pad be added once the notebook is full?
With some designs yes, with others no – it depends on the binding. Before buying, check on the specific product whether the inner pad is replaceable. If it matters to you, write to us and we'll recommend a suitable design.
How do I care for wooden covers?
Hardly at all. Just wipe them with a dry cloth and don't leave the notebook in the wet or in direct sunlight. Wood darkens slightly over time, which is a natural ageing process – on a notebook carried in a bag every day, it only adds character.
How long does it take to make an engraved notebook?
We make personalised pieces to order, so allow for a longer delivery time than for items in stock. For bulk corporate orders, it's best to get in touch several weeks in advance, especially in the fourth quarter.
What notebooks does AMADEA offer?
