The wooden planter box with a heart carries the universal symbol of love, care and home. That is why it is often bought as a wedding gift, an anniversary present, for a country cottage or for Mum. The heart cut into natural spruce looks romantic without being overly sweet, so it suits a rustic balcony railing as well as a modern minimalist window sill.

The planter box is made of solid spruce with no surface treatment. Spruce is a traditional wood for outdoor planter boxes in the Czech Republic; it is light and easy to work. Exposed to direct rain and sun, it gradually weathers to a silvery patina, which many customers appreciate as a natural look. If you want to keep its pale colour, we recommend applying a natural oil or wood stain once a year.

The 60 × 19 × 16.5 cm plastic insert has a water reservoir at the bottom. You top up the water through the filling opening and can check the level with the water-level indicator. A wick gradually draws moisture from the reservoir to the roots, so the plants take up water by themselves as needed. The insert is included in the price of the planter box; you don't order it separately.

The 60 × 19.5 × 15 cm planter box takes classic balcony plants: two to three geraniums (pelargoniums), trailing petunias (Surfinia), begonias, annuals, or herbs such as basil, mint and thyme. For year-round planting, choose evergreen perennials such as hebe, lingonberry or small ornamental grasses. The insert is also deep enough for strawberries and small alpine plants.

We recommend it, but it is not essential. If the planter box stands under a roof or on a sheltered balcony, it will last several seasons even without treatment. When placed outdoors in the rain, linseed oil, wood wax or a natural wood stain applied before first use and then once a year will extend its life. The plastic insert protects the wood from direct moisture when watering.

The difference is mainly in the length of the inner space. The 62 cm version takes a 60 cm self-watering insert and holds roughly three geraniums or more herbs. The 52 cm version is designed for a 50 cm insert and two plants. The 62 cm size usually suits a standard window or balcony railing; for a narrow sill under a window, choose the smaller size instead.

The depth of 21.5 cm and the weight of 1.86 kg for the cover alone (approx. 2.6 kg with the plastic insert, plus soil and water) are designed so that the planter box stands securely on most balcony rails and ledges. We always recommend adding plastic or metal planter box brackets to the railing as a safeguard against falling in the wind.
